1.11  Oxford Diocesan Marriage Bonds and Affidavits, 1661-1850.
From Ed  Hanson
These entries cover Marriage bonds and affidavits issued by the Bishop of Oxford, taken from a multi-volume typescript at the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies. There is a separate set for the licenses issued by the Archdeacon. Note also that Benson and other surrounding villages appear to be covered in one of two peculiaries, either Monks Risborough or Banbury, and not by the diocesan or archdiaconal ones. The dates listed are the dates of the license, not of the marriage.

Part of a series - Victoria History of the Counties of England - Volume 6, Page 244
The Manor of Middleton
Alice Lacey married Thomas Earl of Lancaster; he was executed March 1322 and she remarried Sir Ebles Lestrange without the King's licence but Edward III granted several of Alice's manors; includes Middleton to Ebles Lestrange for life. They had a son, Roger Lestrange, Lord of Knockin 1348; the line continued for over 100 years.

To the Lestrange whose main estates were in Shropshire; Middleton presented itself as a manor which could conveniently be assigned to dower, and it was held first by Joan, the widow of Roger Lestrange (d1349) then by Alice widow of another Roger Lestrange (d1398) then by Maud widow of John Lestrange (d1398). In 1479 on death of John the manor came into the possession of the Earls of Derby by the marriage of his only daughter and heiress, Joan, to George Stanley.

Cato Street Conspiracy: Robert Brayne, mayor of Banbury, to Hobhouse about the character of William Strange, and that John Strange is unknown to him 1820 Apr 3   -   Banbury April 3/ 20
Sir,
William Strange the person, whose character Lord Sidmouth has desired of me, came to settle in this place as a draper about a year ago, during which time he has conducted himself with seeming propriety, & appears to be under no particular suspicion of any kind, His native place is Wardington in Northamptonshire five miles from hence. He has lately given out that he is going to remove to Brackley & nothing further of him than that he is one of those cheap-shop adventurers who do not stay long in one place. Of the prisoner John Strange we know nothing.

5. The Parishes of Oxfordshire

This list shows the parishes of pre-1974 Oxfordshire. The dates in parentheses are, to the best of my knowledge, the dates of the earliest existing registers for that parish. If you know otherwise please let me know (Note this reference is only included until the full extent of each of the registers is known and shown here).  For later dates, especially those in the 19th/20th centuries, it indicates the year in which the parish was formed. A place marked "ex.par." was outside the jurisdiction of any parish, such status was abolished in 1894.

From: Heather Olsen
Subject: William Strange - Farnborough Warks & Banbury Oxf
Asking Paul Strange she said, "Do you have additional info on this William? I do not know of any connection between my Stranges and him, but as my Stranges have some connections to both Banbury and Warwickshire, there may be a connection somewhere.

From Banbury records I have baptisms of two of William and Susanna's children:
William Strange bap. 1 Nov 1839
Henry Albert Strange bap. 15 May 1844.
I also have the marriage, 5 June 1821 in Banbury of William Strange, Draper, and Sarah Haddon.  Is this the same William, and Sarah a first wife, or are they two different people?"

Paul replied, "The only thing I can add is that I think a William Strange married a Susannah Cooper in 1837 (Banbury). This fits the Farnborough MI and the children's birth dates. Also that Warwickshire Stranges in the 19thC seem to be rare, so it may be worth you looking
further."

1576 Aug 16 Anthony Straung & Ellyn Dring

From Patrick Martin (mart139(at)bellsouth(dot)net)
(law professor Louisiana State University) - 12 Nov 2004
I am writing a paper on a member of the family of Anthony Straunge on your site for 1576-7. He says, "This data is consistent with what I have learned from other sources including the wills of this Ellyn, her first husband (Simon Dring) and of Anthony Strange himself. I will probably cite your web-site for this data but I suppose it might be useful to have a look at the underlying documents if that can be done without too much difficulty. I’ve ordered the visitations of Oxford and may be able to come up with some additional information via it on the Dring and Strange families. But I might like to gather some further information on a couple of points and your services might be useful. From the wills I gather that Ellyn Dring Strange was probably Ellen or Helene Belsyre (Belser, Belcher) before marriage. I would like to learn what relation if any she had to Alexander Belsyre, a noted Oxford scholar who was the first president of St Johns College.

A second area of interest to me concerns a property transaction or several.
Thomas Strange became a Jesuit priest (and he was the Oxford student of 1593 that you mention). He used the aliases of Hungerford and Anderton. It may only be a coincidence but Sir Anthony Hungerford at some point in the early 1600s acquired an estate at Black Bourton. I’m curious whether this might have been the estate which had been owned by Simon Dring when he married Ellyn Belser and whether Strange could have been a relative of the Hungerford family. The Strange family had property in Gloucestershire, and I am interested in discovering if any transactions can be traced that took place in about 1600 to 1610.

(C 1610-1997, M 1651-1996, Bns 1754-1802, 1827-1996, B 1611-1997)
Baptism:
1932 May 21 Frank Leslie Strange, son of Ada May Strange, Bicester, born 16 July 1910

Ada is probably the same Ada Strange of Bicester whose burial was listed at the Littlemore
Hospital, Littlemore, Oxford, 14 March 1927, age 33. She was listed in the 1901 census of
Bicester Market, Oxon:
George Strange; 48; Ironmongers Porter; Sutton Courtney Berks
Mary Strange; 47; Bicester
Edward Strange; 19; Agricultural Labourer; Bicester
George Strange;  18; Agricultural Labourer; Bicester
Edith Strange; 14; General Servant; Bicester
Albert Strange; 13; Errand Boy Port; Bicester
Elsie Strange; 10; Bicester
Ada Strange; 7; Bicester
Alice Strange; 6M; Bicester

Her father George, was listed as a mortician, age 25, when he married Mary Ann Leach, 24, at Bicester, 14 May 1878. Further back, George's father was Henry.  Henry Strange wasn't very good at his age; in the 1861, 1881, and 1901 censuses all list him as being born in Sutton Courtenay, BUT listed his age in 1861 as 29; in 1881 as 44; in 1901 as 73; and in his burial record in 1908 as 80. This would put his birthdate anywhere between 1828 and 1837, and I don't find him anywhere else at present, although obviously not the little boy who was buried in 1817. Henry's wife Amy similarly seems to have had trouble remembering her age, which varies from 27 in 1861; 40 in 1881; 66 in 1901 census and 64 in her 1901 burial record.

Paul Dandridge, Dorchester & Mary Strange, Newnam, m 11 Nov 1707

From Maisie White, South Africa: I see you have found my John Strange DANDRIDGE yes that is his name and it follows through at least 3 if not 4 generations I say my as I am trying to piece together the UK DANDRIDGE jigsaw although I am not one hundred % sure where John the father of the John who married Letitia STRANGE fits into the scenario. DANDRIDGE JOHN  21 Oct 1760 KINGS WALDEN HERTS STRANGE LETITIA There are about 4 generations from their son John Strange DANDRIDGE all bearing the same name, with the last of the name as far as I can tell dying in Tasmania.(See PCC Wills, PROB 11/1940 23 February 1841 Will of Reverend John Strange Dandridge, Rector, Clerk of Rousham, Oxfordshire .... Ed).  This John S DANDRIDGE could be the son of John and Letitia who was born bef 12/04/1765 or his son JSD born abt 1793 m Susan ? possibly in Worcs but so far I am still researching and double checking the IGI info which places their son JSD born 1823 in Droitwich and their daughter Catherine Letitia D 1824 in Inkberrow. There are two links between STRANGE and DANDRIDGE as far as I know at this time, the above link and the following: DANDRIDGE PAUL 1707 CUXHAM STRANGE MARY h = DORCHESTER w = NEWNHAM Religion BAPTISTS.

I hope to have the time to write up my own family history; some of it makes quite fascinating reading; meanwhile here are some of the more juicy bits whilst I get on with the collection of everyone else's STRANGE families!

This is the most significant parish for the history of my own family with John STRANGE c1749-1809 coming most probably from Long Wittenham, Berkshire, where there is evidence that his ancestors were for about 100 years.  His first marriage was in Caversham but that was short-lived, his wife, Jane DORMER, died in childbed.  John later came to Henley and won the contract to build the new workhouse in 1790/91; now a Grade II listed building.  The Contract for this job (which was worth £1600); and its associated Bond are held in the Oxfordshire Archives References C IV 11/2 F36 and F37.

John must have stayed around Caversham as this was where one of his sons, John STRANGE 1778-1845, was baptized. He also was to be a builder and owned a brick kiln at Comp Farm.  He died leaving an estate of £800; his fourth wife Sarah MULCOCK) survived him, Mary Ann COPELAND, Mary GOODALL and Amy HANCOCK didn't!

A son, William Copeland STRANGE 1805-1875 (my great, great, grandfather), got up to all sorts of mischief including a bankruptcy (The Times, June 25, 1856; pg.6; Issue 22403; col A; Official Appointments and Notices - From the London Gazette of Tuesday, June 24. Lord Chamberlain's Office, May 31. Bankrupts - William Copeland Strange, Henley-on-Thames, Bricklayer, July 8, at half-past 1 o'clock, August 6, at 1, at the Bankrupts' Court: solicitors, Messrs. Surr and Gribble, Abchurch-lane; official assignee, Mr.Stansfeld).  There is a family story from a cousin in Canada, Arthur STRANGE, that William went bankrupt because he was not paid for work he carried out on Reading Jail

William was later to be made an officer of the Local Board, Surveyor, Collector of Rates and Inspector of Nuisances; he was found to have misappropriated the rates and was sacked. William met his maker in the hospital of the workhouse his grandfather had built and where he had modified the cess pits there himself.

It was in this very workhouse that my great grandfather, James STRANGE, was to be found in 1881 with his mother and two sets of twin sisters.    ....... more anon.

Subject: William Strange of Holton, Oxon
Has any one any idea where William Strange came from?
He married Anne Harris in Oxford, St Mary Magdalene in 13 Feb 1742/43 and then had
11 children in Holton, Oxon and died in Holton in 1803.  By my calculation he must have been
born before 1720 but where. The nearest found was in 1711 Jun 12 William Strange, son
William & Frances in Long Wittenham.  Said both of Holton at marriage.

[Note: I am advised by Kate Partridge that the name "Ropard" should be "Richard", she has Richard BLUNT as one of her ancestors - MS]

Kate also said in Jan 2006, "I do not know what the connection is but some of the witnesses on the Strange will are the same as on Richard Blunts will in 1629. Richard was a yeoman in Mixbury, and seemed relatively well off. His son , Welsborn, was a linen draper in Bicester and warrants a mention in the Victoria County Histories. The Blunts/Blounts had become ag-labs by the middle 1700` s, so lost their wealth fairly quickly. I feel that they were Catholic as their fortunes faltered after the Inter-regnum. The Mixbury records only go back to 1645, so I do not know if they are originally from Mixbury, but we have never found a satisfactory marriage for a Richard Blunt elsewhere, so I think that they married locally about 1600. There alot of Blunts in Roade, just a couple of miles north of Mixbury, so I tend to think that they came from that area. I would be interested to know how they came by their money as Richard left a 100 pound dowry for his youngets daughter in his will. I think that I will have to try and interpret manorial records-that will be a challenge!

Helen Olsen said on 21 Jan 2005: I am researching the family of John and Joan Strange who had children baptised in Mixbury between 1672 and 1683. A Richard Strange, who with wife Frances had children baptised there in the same period, is probably John's brother. A Richard Strange buried there in 1677 may be the father of John and Richard. I have not been able to find baptisms in Mixbury for John or Richard, but as the Mixbury baptisms only start in 1645, they may have been born before the records begin. I have also not found a marriage for either of them. I found the will of a Thomas Strange in Mixbury in the early 1600s. It is too early to be very helpful, but does suggest the family were in the parish quite early.

Has anyone found a marriage for a John Strange and Joan or Richard Strange and Frances in any of the nearby parishes?

Can anyone suggest some other 17th century sources that might be helpful? Are there, for example, surviving quarter sessions or other court records from this period that might mention this family? Any surviving manorial records for Mixbury?

This appeared on the STRANGE Surname Message Board on www.familyhistory.com "Hi my name is Shirley Beaton, my mom was born in Oxford in 1920 her name was STRANGE and her Dad was Fred STRANGE. I know I have a cousin named Micheal and he lived in Oxford he would be about 57 now. I have no idea where I just wanted to say hi, most of my relatives are in England so I will just keep looking."

Dave Beames said:
In my youth (a fair while ago) Messrs Strange's was a large and busy Oxford barber's shop. I think they were somewhere in the High Street, quite near Carfax, and possibly below street-level (in fact they were actually in Market Street - Stephanie Jenkins). They had a row of at least a dozen chairs, and they charged 9d for adults and 6d for boys.

Sue Hedges said:
"Strange and Son listed in Kelly's 1938 at 6 and 15 Market Street telephone number 2762 under the heading Hairdressers and Perfumers and also Ladies Hairdressers.

Theophilus  Clifford b 1789 Bourton on water Glos son of William & Elizabeth (Greyhurst) Clifford,  married Sarah Goodall  b 1798 Oxford St Aldgate. They had  7 children,  the third a daughter is named MARY GOODALL STRANGE CLIFFORD  b 1824 Great Marlow Bucks.  Theophilus was a builder of bridges in the Thames area. One daughter is named Charlotte Suspensia Clifford b 1928  Marlow.  I wonder if she is named after the suspension bridge there. I'm researching the Strange family who settled in Australia in 1848. Am trying to find info about William Strange, born Oxfordshire in 1786. He married Sarah ester and later Ann White. His children were born in Stokenchurch.  Also From: Mary Beaumont 16 Jun 2002 My interest is in William Strange and Anne White of Stokenchurch.

My 3 x great grandparents were William STRANGE and Ann WHITE, who married in Stokenchurch 29 October 1825 and arrived in Geelong, Victoria, Australia per "Berkshire" 3 October 1848 with their 7 children.  William had been previously married to Sarah Hester or Nestor, with whom he had 6 children (Martha and George being the only two who may have reached adulthood). I would like to know what became of Martha & George, and I would dearly love to know where William Strange was born(29 October 1786 somewhere in Oxfordshire) and his ancestry.  (It is probable that William came from Turville in Buckinghamsire - Mike Strange)

From the wife of Peter Townsend : My grandfather, George STRANGE was born in Stokenchurch 11 Aug 1875. His father, also GEORGE, is described as a chair turner on the birth certificate; his mother was Martha Strange, formerly Bird. When Geoge Jnr. married in Setember 1898 George Snr. was described as a Chair Maker. From personal experience I know that my grandfather George had a younger brother Tom STRANGE (married to "Jinnie", formerly Anderson) and they had four sons. From Hi Pete and Jen Tranter (peteandjen{at}ripnet{dot}aunz{dot}com) 27 Mar 2005 I am researching the surname Dandridge and the surname Strange seems to pop up on a regular basis. I have an unwated death certificate for a Sophia Strange aged 80 years, widow of Abraham Strange, bricklayer. Sophia died on the 23rd January 1877 in Stokenchurch Oxon. The informant was a Mary Ann Strange, Daughter in Law. Happy to pass it on to anyone who can use it.

Beli (BeliLindt[at]gmail[dot]com said I'm related to many of the STRANGE chairmakers of High Wycombe and Stokenchurch. I'd love to hear from anyone else whose family is from the same area.

From Robert Shaw  on 05 Jan 2004
My grandfather was Stanley Strainge and his father was Robert Strainge, however, he changed his name to Robert Shaw.  He has a sister Carole and brother Stan. I have a brother Robert.

Ed Hanson replied, "I do know how you fit into the Strainge family, because your grandfather Stanley and my mother were first cousins and always kept in close touch. I met Stan on several trips to San Diego, met your father once, and think may even have met you in the
toddler stage. If you look at the Strange website page under Oxfordshire, you can see the baptismal record of your grandfather, Stanley Herbert Strainge at Warborough (the Herbert was in honour of his uncle, who was my grandfather). Going back one generation more, his
father was William Edwin Strainge, and his baptismal record can be seen among the records for Benson, where the family lived for nearly 200 years
