Free Census UK - Bedfordshire 

A project to transcribe the UK Census Returns and make them availabale without charge is underway.

The slogan of FreeCEN is rightly:

"Bringing YOUR ancestors to YOU, free of charge.
Come and join us".

I am County Co-ordinator for Bedfordshire for the 1891 Census and have the microfiche on loan from the Genealogical Society of Utah for this project; they arrived on 12th April 2001 and have been going out to volunteers since then. I completed and uploaded the final Piece on 14th April 2005.

I have evaluated all places in Bedfordshire to ensure that I receive all of the relevant fiche relevant to the County and the town/village structure by name and film numbers from the Bedfordshire & Luton Archives & Records Service (BDF CRO), the Public Record Office (PRO) and Family History Library (FHL); I have included these details and further amendments from the fiche as I review them and they are shown by place name on an attached page.   

Some of the Bedfordshire places came under the jurisdiction of Registration Districts in neighbouring counties.  You will see on the attached page that I have marked these with the relevant county name and they will have to wait until there is a co-ordinator for those counties (any volunteers?).

Additionally, there are some places that came under the jurisdiction of the Bedfordshire Registration County but were not in the County of Bedfordshire, these are included below.  The list shows transcription, checking and validation process status.  When all three stages are complete then they will be available, without charge, for all to search and enjoy.  I have used a traffic light system to show progress RED (not started or returned incomplete), YELLOW (in progress) and GREEN (completed) .... and they are now all GREEN!.  

The FreeCEN database and search facility is operational and all validated Pieces are available via the Project Page , consequently the detail is no longer available at this web site.
