SANDY

The first discovery of Roman remains in Sandy was when excavations were being made 150 years ago for the railway link to London and for the Cambridge branch line.  A Roman cemetery, including evidence of Roman cremations along with some stone coffins, coins, jewellery and pottery.  A hoard of ironwork was also found; this is now in the British Museum.

If you would like to know more about Roman Sandy visit the educational and interactive website that allows you to take part in the archaelogical excavation and quizzes.  A booklet, produced by the Bedfordshire Archaeological  Service, is available from Sandy Town Council at £4.99.
