CALDECOTE

Source unknown - probably 1975

Compared with the other villages of the group there is not a real centre to be found here, and the village marks a transition from the wooded landscape of Northill to that which achieves its ultimate bleakness around Arlesey and Stotfold.

Sir Arthur Blomfield's All Saints' Church of 1867 and adjoining buildings is a point of strong architectural character.  In grey brick with red trim, the church lacks the charm of an older structure, and is a little confused in style, but it does give some identity to this part of the village which is augmented by the fantastic gable of a barn at Attertons Farm across the road. This whole group of buildings is in fact the older Caldecote which if one can visualise it without the accretions of the last 50 years must have grouped impressively in the open land-scape. The Green to the south is still a remarkable survival and compares with that at Beeston for unexpectedness in that one comes upon an open area of grassland with some thankfulness amidst such intensive market gardening.
