A collection of events and people that folk are trying to locate: BIRTHS/BAPTISMS: For Belinda Ireland-Johnston (belilindt(at)gmail(dot)com) Edith Ida Strange - The birds are singing and the sun is shining and I FOUND EDITH'S WEDDING!!!!!!!! Sep quarter 1910 (ie 5 years earlier than I thought) STRANGE, Edith I, Wycombe, 3a, 1993 LORD, Hugh H, Wycombe, 3a, 1993 Now as, I believe, Edith was 16 when she was married I can work backwards to find her birth. Anyone know anything about Edith Ida STRANGE? For John Lyne I am interested in finding information on GEORGE FREDERICK STRANGE ( My maternal Grandfather) born in the Brighton area aprox 1870 and married to Louisa BIRD.they lived in the Portslade area from 1900 to 1920? There were four boys, two M.I.A. in France in WW1 plus one that had a Daughter that died two years ago and one that had no children. For "Helen Habergham" 4helenmothergoose.4@tiscali.co.uk I have a marriage copy (LDS Fiche) of Thomas Strange of the parish of Coleshill in the county of Berks (Bucks, surely) to Ann NORTON of this parish Winterbourne Bassett by Banns 8th March 1804.(marriage at W/Bassett)they both signed X Has anyone on the list come across a baptism for this Thomas? My Stranges` come from Kent, Middlesex, Wandsworth and have been able to connect with a family from Wiltshire.I have been able to claim quite a few of the Stranges` on the Kent page. For Cheryl cheryl@go-aussie.com I am looking for a Samuel Strange who lived in Lambeth in the early 1900's. He was born around 1863,64 or 1865. I think he died in 1904 I cannot find any information as to where he came from or his family. he is listed as born at Brentwood but I feel that is untrue.; he lived at Lambeth with my great-grandmother who was born at Brentwood. From: waford28@hotmail.com Looking birth of Thomas Strange about 1732 married Hannah Beasley 1755 @ Shalbourne, Berks/Wilts For Liz Horner: I still haven't found details of Elizabeth Strange's birth, around 1855 -1858, but have established that she was of the same family as Ellen Strange, widow of Francis, son of Francis, cordwainer of Southwold. Elizabeth is listed in the Hackney workhouse in 1861 with 2 brothers, Henry, son of Ellen and Francis Strange, and William, 1 year younger than Elizabeth. Their mother is not in the workhouse at the time although she is still alive in 1881. MARRIAGES: For Betty JudgeStill checking Stan's ancestors, West Hanney, Lyford etc in Berkshire. We know that a William STRANGE was born in Hanney, (stated on 1851 Census, when he was living with one of his sons in Aston Tirrold. & he was a widower.) Baptised c 1789. I have 1841 Census for Aston Tirrold, he is there with wife Sarah, and his sons and daughter. Oldest one bap 1818, at Aston Tirrold Church, as are the rest of the family. But I,m unable to find a marriage for William & Sarah, no date or place. (they may even have more children?) I 've read the Bishop's transcripts on microfish, and the Church records on film. for Aston Tirrold (very hard to decipher in places.especially the first years). For Heather Olsen Before birth of their first child December in 1789; of Thomas Strange and Lydia ????. The marriage was probably but not necesarily in Surrey or Middlesex. Couple lived in Kingston, Surrey after marriage. Subject: Family Tree Magazine - Jan 1999 DEATHS/BURIALS: OTHER EVENTS: From Rob Strange From John Lynne From Lyn Gander
I am researching my mothers maiden name of "HART" and have traced the direct line to a Francis Hart who married Mary Odell 7 Apr 1799, Wavenden, Bucks (Source: Parish Records). According to the Posse Comutatus 1778 for Buckinghamshire he was resident in the parish of Wavendon and a farm servant. The Harts can be traced back to 1625 in Wavendon but I can find no record of the birth or death of Francis. I can only assume that he died between 1815 when his youngest son was born and 1824 when his father in law's will named Mary as a widow. In Sept 1824 Francis and Mary had a son "William Strange Hart" (who died at Millbrook, Beds April 1823). In my quest to find out more about Francis and his origins I wondered why he had given his son the second christian name of Strange when all of his other children had only one christian name. On the a2a site for the London Metropolitan Archives. ( Francis' son Franklin who is my 3 x gt. grandfather went to London and became a master tailer in the City.) one of the files was entitled "STRANGE AND HART FAMILY". It formed a number of records donated by Julius White and Bywater, now Machrell & Co.via the BRA on 21 October, 1981 which consisted of a number of wills. Some were "Strange" wills, commencing with William Strange of Bishopsgate Street, London and Upton, Essex dated 1836, and some were "Hart" wills commencing with Charles Hart of Greenwich, Kent dated 1863 (who I subsequently found out was born in Banbury, Oxford) The files showed no link between the two families. Relatives examined the various wills at the London Metropolitan Archives but left none the wiser. William Strange named his wife Esther but she was in fact his second wife, his first pre deceasing him but I have not yet had the opportunity of researching his first marriage - was his first wife a Hart? who knows. From: Cheryl From Karen Moulder Hamilton, Bermuda My maiden name was Strange, and I am descended from John Strange who was born in England in 1809, married Mary Dickinson, and their son James Strange born in England in 1845 who died in Phila. Pa. However, I haven't been able to trace any further back nor do I know anything about them. Would you have any more information about the ancestors of these people? From: Pam Mayhew Subject: Alice Strange My maternal grandmother (Eliza) Alice Strange was born 27.5.1881 at Aldershot, second daughter of William and Susan nee Barnett. William was born Lambeth, Susan Aldershot. There was an older sister Martha and a younger brother William. I think I have found William on the 1851 census for Lambeth, son of Eliza Strange, head of household with a younger sister Nancy or could be Francy. Eliza was born Bermondsey but cant read childrens birthplace, it definitely says Surrey but rest is illegible - possibly St Georges followed by query query query Eastbourne but that's Sussex. So where do I look next? From Bill Reed, Knoxville, Tennessee USA Subject: Dandridge and Strange Date sent: Tue, 5 Nov 2002 I have been investigating my wife's ancestry, she is deceased and left little to go on. I susepct that she is descended from John Dandridge and Bridget Dugdale (married at St Mary Magdalene near Old Fish St in Middlesex, outskirts fo London). Elizabeth probably married William Claiborne III and had children in England or in Virginia in the USA. I find tht many people have entered data on John Dandridge of London, another John Dandridge (perhaps the same man) of Oxford, and still another John Dandridge (perhaps the same man) of Worcester. They may or may not be the same man. I find that some of the Dandridge descendants of John include John, the father of Martha Dandridge who married in Virginia, first a Custis, and second, George Washington, the first president of the USA. I find that John Strange Dandridge was listed in the community where some of the Dandridge ancestors lived. I also find that, perhaps coincidentally, Francis Dandridge of London left a will in which he named George Nares as a legatee. When I look up George Nares on the Internet, he is said to have married Jane Dandridge (probably an uncle or a brother in law to Francis Dandridge). Francis Dandridge was closely related to Martha Dandridge (an uncle or a great uncle). I see that there are also some possible connectons between Nares and Strange. For Ed Hanson I'm still searching for William Strainge, who was baptized at Benson, Oxon, 18 March 1792, the son of Hannah Ricketts (who later married the father, Thomas Strainge of Benson). William was called a yeoman of Benson (Bensington) in March 1811, when he was charged with being the father of a natural child of one Mary Ricketts, also of Bensington (probably a cousin of his); his father Thomas Strange, farmer of Bensington, co-signed the bond for William to appear at the next court [Oxfordshire Quarter Sessions Court, Easter term 1811. Oxfordshire Record Office]. The child was baptized at Benson, 14 July 1811, as William, natural son of Mary Ricketts. He was probably the William Strainge of Benson, who married Charlotte West of Kingston Lisle, Berks, on 12 July 1814 at Kingston Lisle (witnesses: Ann Humphries, Martha Wajers, Daniel Isles). And they were probably the parents of the following children who were baptised at Faringdon, Berks, as the children of "William Strange, wagonner, and Charlotte": 1. George, bp. 18 April 1816; 2. Marianne, bp. 13 July 1817. Then the trail runs dry, except that we know he was living in 1851 when he was mentioned in the will of his sister Sophia. Paul Strange suggested the William of Chelsea who left a widow Charlotte and an 1851 will, but on checking that found: William Strange of Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, grocer, made his will 24 April 1851 (proved 9 May 1851). He left to each of his six children (unnamed) £100 three per cent bank annuities; to wife Charlotte all the balance of his estate (PCC 1851 Middlesex May 421. PROB 11/2133/9). The IGI lists six children of William & Charlotte baptized at St Luke's, Chelsea: William, bp 11 Jan 1829; Robert, bp 11 Jan 1829; Charles, bp 14 Oct 1829; William, bp 19 Oct 1831; Emma, bp 11 Oct 1833; Fanny, bp 30 Sept 1835; Charlotte, bp 12 July 1837. Not impossible for him to have gone from being a wagonner in Berkshire to a grocer in Chelsea and to have six surviving children of eight born (although there is a 12-year gap between Marianne and William & Robert, who may have been twins or just baptized together). However, I now find another one. William Strange of 76 Old Broad Street in the City of London made his will on 19 July 1855 (proved at the Principal Registry, 4 May 1858) and left his entire estate to his wife Charlotte, not mentioning any one else. Has anyone come across this William of London? Or, for that matter, any other combination of William and Charlotte? Of course, they could just as easily emigrated and be lurking somewhere abroad! Also William & Charlotte Strange (marriage not yet located). They had four children baptized at St Mary's, Staines, Middlesex: William, 25 Dec 1799; thomas, 6 Jan 1803; George, 8 Dec 1805; and Eliza, 31 Dec 1809. This William was probably the one baptized in the same parish, 16 July 1774, the son of Thomas Strange who married Mary Yeowell of Chertsey, Surrey, spinster, at St Mary's Staines, 9 Dec 1772 (witnesses: Ann Strange [her mark] and Robert Powell). From Peter Foster I am interested in the name Strange, but the Stranges from Warrington, which was my ex-wife's maiden name. I gather that the family ran a bakery in Warrington at 12 St James's St, Latch ford, and his horse & carts had "It's Strange where the bread comes from. William James Strange lived in Warrington around the 1890's; he married Gertrude Arnold some time and had two children; Arnold , who went to China in the 20's as a missionary and William Howard. The family emigrated to Montreal at the turn of the century. Arnold married in China and had two children. He died there in the 1940's fleeing the Japanese. His wife, Winfred eventually got back to the UK. The two children were Kathleen and Beryl and both were interned by the Japanese. After the war they returned to the UK. Kathleen emigrated to Montreal in 1954 to see her grandmother and uncle. That's where I met her and we were married in 1957. We came back to the UK in 1964; sadly the marriage did not last and we were divorced some 10 years ago. Kathleen and her son have just returned from China were she was able to find the house she grow up in. From Valerie Wotton, Sydney via Belinda I have received from the Catholic Melbourne Diocesan Historical Commission a 1961 obituary of a cousin to my grandmother. It relates to Fr. Bernard McGrade, Catholic priest of Black Rock Victoria who died in 1961 (parents mentioned as Bernard and Mary Ann "both deceased"). It states that "principal mourner was Mrs G. Strange of Sydney, a cousin of the late Father McGrade". From the BDM website I found the marriage of Jean Lindsay McGRADE to Henry George (hence Mrs. "G") STRANGE in 1938 so believe this Jean is "the cousin" (but I cannot find her birth record to ascertain her parents names to see how she fits in so perhaps she was born after 1905). If anyone comes across descendants of H. G. Strange and Jean L. McGrade/Flood please contact Valerie. From Sandra in Ontario Could anyone provide me with some insight on obtaining more information regarding a Mr. STRANGE who was a corest maker from London? The Stamford Mercury, Lincolnshire carried the following advertisement February 13, 1812: STRANGE, Corset-maker (from Mrs. Long's, Duke-street, Manchester-square, London), returns thanks to the ladies of STAMFORD and MARKET DEEPING, for the encouragement he has received. After 30 years experience, he flatters himself that no person in Stamford or in the neighbourhood can shape Corsets to any pattern equal to himself.-Orders addressed to Strange, at Mr. Spademan's, shoemaker, Beast-market, Stamford, will be punctually attended to, and a pattern produced. From: Mervyn Shearman Sydney, Australia Date sent: Thu, 7 Feb 2002 Subject:: John STRANGE, born Oxford I am looking for a John STRANGE shown in the 1851 Census for Quenington, Gloucestershire as a tea dealer, age 21, born in [OXF] Oxford. His mother's name was Mary. I am trying to find out whether she was the Mary FRANKLIN who married Thomas STRANGE at Quenington in 1832. In the 1851 Census Mary STRANGE was shown as a widow. If the family still lived in Oxford in 1841, they may show up in the Census. It's a tall order, since I can't give the name of the parish, but if anyone comes across the name STRANGE in any parish baptism register around 1830, perhaps they could let me know. From Terri - kaleb302004"at"yahoo.com.au From Mark Strange - mark"at"kempsford.net From Jean Williams - jean1.williams"at"ntlworld.com I am looking for the dates of death of the following people, all lived in Cholsey. 1. A baptism for Joseph would be nice too. 4. I would also like the dob of John STRANGE who died in 1786 in Cholsey. He married Maria BENNETT in 1744 at St Helen's, Abingdon. Maria was born in Standlake, Abingdon; and I don't have her dob either. Found two possible baptisms of my John STRANGE, details as follows: John died in Cholsey in July 1786. He married Maria BENNETT at St Helen's Church, Abingdon. I have a cross stitched sampler that has been handed down in my grandmother's family that was worked by Matilda STRANGE at age 9 in 1838...making her birthyear abt. 1827? I've found a connection between my LEE ancestors and the STRANGE family in that George LEE married (bef. 1836) Catherine Ann STRANGE b. 1813 d. 1896 and they had 7 children. (I descend from their youngest--Henry More LEE.). One of Catherine Ann's siblings was named Matilda but the date of the sampler does not correspond with the ages of the siblings. I've been trying to make a connection to this sampler for years....almost there!! Response from Heather Olsen - Can you tell me where these people lived? There is probably no connection, but I have a Thomas Strange who took over a business in High Wycombe, Bucks in about 1825 that previously belonged to a John Lee.
