1763 Oct 08 WAGERSFIELD, Charles, gardener, Shotover = CONSTABLE, Martha, Radley
STRANGE, William, glassman, Oxford, Bondsman.
(From Maisie White When I joined this list I really didn't expect to find one of my missing
WAGERFIELD marriages (I was hunting a couple of STRANGE ladies.) Problem: I checked for
Martha Constable in Radley and found she had married 8 Aug 1772 a Robert Tyrell.
Batch no. M 137552 which could be wrong. Nowhere could I find a Wagerfield. I tried Oxford
and there is no Shotover where he came from,it is not listed in the maps, but is shown as a
square with 2 trees in, (a forest maybe, or a private House and Garden., he was a gardener.
Betty Judge says: The Witness or Bondsman is one of Stan's ancestors. Just a suggestion,
could his name be Wakefield?
Maisie says: This Charles was, I believe, born in Oxford and it is possible he worked at
Shotover House on the Shotover Estate. I have a marriage from the IGI that needs checking
in 1754 for Charles W to Mary FERRIMAN at Christ Church Oxford , it needs checking as no day
or month are entered.
The story continues: This is the entry from the Christ Church Oxford transcripts:-
Marriage-1754 Jan 18 WAGERFIELD Charles of Shotover & FERRIMAN Mary of Wheatley Shotover came
under Forest Hill, I looked for a baptism of Mary but there is not one there, however I found
the following:
Buriels-at Forest Hill
1755 Sep 18 WAGERFIELD Mary Shotover
1755 Sep 18 WAGERFIELD Charles s of Mary above written
1767 May 07 WAGERFIELD Charles Shotover
I also looked at the application for a licence(Wilts MBL) and it would appear he had intended
to re-marry! WAGERFIELD Charles, gardener, Shotover CONSTABLE Martha of Radley, Bondsman:
William STRANGE glassman,of Oxford. I think the Bondsman would have put up money. As you say
the marriage is not in the Radley transcripts and the chap Martha did marry(after
Charles died) was from Sutton Wick in Berks.

Broad Blunsdon (Highworth)
From Georgie Harland who shares a great-great-grandmother, Hannah STRANGE from Broad
Blunsdon, with David Cassells ;
another person connected with Charles STRANGE is Sarah Griggs .
Here is the information we have on our STRANGE family;
David has shown information that says Charles (Ag Lab) was born 1773 in Broad Blunsdon.
There was a reference to Tetbury, GLS for details of Charles STRANGE, his parents and
siblings but the dates are inconsistent.

Georgie believes Hannah's family were still in Broad Blunsdon in the 1930s; she has a photo
of a very old couple leaning over a cottage gate but doesn't know their names.
From Valerie Fairbrass: Mary STRANGE married the Revd John DESCRAMBES of Wroughton on Feb 12 1771 at Blunsdon St
Andrew and Jemima Edwards was a witness. Jemima was bapt at Blunsdon St Andrew on Nov 6th
1737 the daughter of Mr Richard Straing and Ann (nee Dyer). Jemima's brother, Thomas, is
my direct ancestor and I have considerable information about this famiy. They were the
ancestors of the Swindon STRANGEs who accumulated a large part of the the Swindon towns
trade in the early 19th century, set up the first bank there (STRANGE, GARRETT, STRANGE
and COOK) and were prominent in the Independent cause setting up the first non-conformist
chapel there.

From Patrick STRANGE on 15 Jan 2004
My G/G/Grandfather was called William Jefferys STRANGE (1811-1900) and I believe that his
father Thomas STRANGE married Ann Jefferys on the 16 Feb 1809 at Calne in Wiltshire.
I wonder if my G/G/G/Grandmother was connected to your (Valerie Fairbrass's) Jefferys from
Swindon, as I cannot at present really tie her birth, place or date down.
Valerie replied, "At the moment the JEFFEREY connection seems to be based on St Margarets,
Westminster (where my STRANGE line had moved from Swindon around 1800) and Wisbech,
Cambridge. If anything crops up I will let you know.
From Nancy STRANGE in August 2005: My father Ronald Frederick George STRANGE b.1905, GF Frederick George STRANGE b1881, and GGF Thomas STRANGE b.1855, were all from Calne, Wiltshire. I believe had the same address over the years of No4 Cottage Lane, No4 Coft Lane, and No4 Cott Lane. There seems to be a gap until about 1800 for the Calne area. Thomas(1855) was married toEmma Stratford(1853) from Cricklade, and have traced her back several generations.

+ Sarah HEATH
4 Robert STRANGE b 1796 d c 1852 (to be confirmed)
+ Mary CLARK b c1800 (possibly 1781 - source not known) d 1864
5 Robert James STRANGE b 1828 in Streatley, Berkshire, emigrated to and died in New Zealand in 1875. Baptism in Berkshire says "s Robert & Mary of Devizes, attorney" - see siblings of Robert in Streatley, BRK
Godfrey also said in Jan 2006:
The following reference came from a book called "Swindon 50 years ago
more or less" by William Morris, pub 1885; and was to James' father, it
suggests that Thomas was indeed
a very religious man - but no hint that he was ordained "James Strange
was the third son of the truly pious and highly esteemed Mr Thos Strange....Thos
Strange lived under the influence of redeeming grace and his heart and house
were open to receive and entertain the ministers of Christ without respect to
name or party."
I have an interest in Revs as Henrietta
Louisa Strange b1823 Devizes, Wilts, came from a very religious, nonconformist,
family. Her father Robert Strange and her uncles were known to preach
frequently at the local Baptist (originally Congregational) churches. Henrietta
herself married the son of a Rev Richard Elliott who was closely associated
with the Strange family and their strong faith. The fact that a Rev Thomas
Strange (see Evenley, Northamptonshire) and a Rev F G Strange have come
to my attention, intrigues me in case there is a connection to this Strange
family.

The site also has the 1871 Lydiard Tregoze census, also with STRANGE families.
c1645 William STRANGE son of Christopher & Idith (nee BEAUMOND) STRANGE (Married Frances)
Shirley Newman provided details of her family in Wiltshire (her father's maternal line):
Simeon STRANGE, b c1846 = Elizabeth LOVEDAY
Child:
William STRANGE = Mary EMBLING Children:
About 12 including Simeon who was brought up by his grandparents, above, at Wroughton,
Wilts. Shirley provided census details for Lydiard Tregoze as follows:

Hubert S 7 Scholar b Wroughton
+ 1 lodger.
Apparently there were two further children, Patricia and Lydia
Ruth married James NEWMAN in 1901 and was at Chilton Farm, Wroughton
Shirley notes that it would appear that Simeon's birth was not registered although he was
baptised. Simeon married Elizabeth LOVEDAY at the High Zion Chapel at Highworth, Wiltshire
in 1865. She observed that there was a STRANGE family living at Highworth at that time and
ponders on there being a connection. Shirley also says that one of Simeon's brothers
(James; but he doesn't show on any of the census above?) kept a public house at Broad Hinton,
that is where Simeon's wife was born. Apparently Simeon and Elizabeth brought up Shirley's
father from birth as his mother, Ruth, died in childbed, Simeon died in 1932 aged 86 and is
buried in Wroughton churchyard. She notes that there are a lot of STRANGE's at the village
of Broad Blunsdon, Wiltshire which comes under the deanary of Highworth, near Swindon; also
a lot around Chippenham.

From Stewart Millar
I am researching STRANGE from Lydiard Tregoze in Wiltshire and have a descendancy table
of six generations with source data that might draw attention on your site - and provide me
with further leads.
Also from a Stewart (not sure if these are one and the same):
My particular interest arises from my wife's patenal line that is directly linked to the
STRANGE name at Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire. I have done some research to date - but never
finishes - and have posted a file (Word document) of the descendants of JAMES STRANGE (c1793)
that leads to my wife. With the descendancy chart is an associated list of sources I have
used - for the most part census records. If there is anyone that might have further
information on any of these lines, I would be delighted to hear from you.
I have also posted an excel spreadsheet of all the "STRANGE" entries in the 1901 census in Wiltshire. This was extracted before the PRO encrypted the household ID's it was using; and provides details of 371 individuals across 122 households - this may be of general interest to the "STRANGE" community.
Jason M.STRANGE said that he is looking for John STRANGE (abt 1824)and Caroline STRANGE in Lydiard Tregoze.

A PDF file based on the above gentleman was sent to me by Godfrey Bell (godfrey.bell(at)btopenworld(dot)com; he stresses that not all events and
connections shown have been proven. Valarie Fairbrass (vfairbrass[at]gmail[dot]com) also sent me another
file based on him, she says, "This file contains seven generations
of my Strange family, originating in Rodbourne Cheney, Wiltshire
but spreading to Blunsdon St Andrew, Swindon, London and beyond.
I have included source details but not the additional notes.
Please notify me of any corrections/additions or ask if I have further
information about any of them; most particularly I have considerable
information about the descendants of James Strange born on
2nd Oct 1761, Swindon, Wiltshire, christened on 16 Oct 1761, who
married Sarah Heath on 14th Dec 1789 in Swindon."

Noted from Chris Gosnell's website concerning PLUMBE; Valerie Fairbrass said she identified
a STRANGE connection to the family of William Plumbe (of Henely)in that it appeared his wife
Ann Richardby STRANGE ( born 19th May 1825, bapt 15 Sept 1825 Newport Street Independent
Chapel, Swindon) was the daughter of Thomas STRANGE (1794 - 1883) and Mary SLARK (b. 1794).
See records for Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire for the baptisms of their children.
From Valerie Fairbrass
I have interest in the STRANGE name and have the following which seem to link to that of Chris Page, Swindon, Wilts.
My ancestor is William Heath STRANGE, born 1791 in Swindon, Wiltshire:
1. Thomas STRANGE b 1725, d Oct 1800 Swindon, buried 15 Oct 1800 Swindon
+ Sarah ???? Bef 1753 b 1722, d 1804 Swindon, bur 7 Apr 1804 Swindon

Valerie says, I have discovered from his will, that the two STRANGE men marrying
Jeffery sisters were indeed brothers. The two William Heath STRANGEs were cousins and
I have found a further William Heath STRANGE marrying in the early 1900s but haven't
connected him with anyone yet.

See London apprenticeship 1806. He was a cheesemonger and may be somehow connected
with a STRANGE family of cheesemongers, based at 2 Bishopsgate without, (residence at
his marriage to Louisa Jeffery) the earliest mention of which I have found in the will
of cheesemonger James STRANGE, Bishopsgate without, 1790 who died leaving 5 daughters.
He moved on marriage to 14 The Broadway, Westminster where his father in law,
Charles Lea Jeffery, also a cheesemonger, resided.

From Godfrey Bell:
I have a Robert STRANGE born 18 May 1796 in Swindon, Wiltshire. He married Mary Clark on 22 Apr 1822. He died 1852 - but I know only the year, Does anybody know the exact date and place of his death and/or burial?
Whaddon
Is this the one near Melksham or the one outside Salisbury?
Subject: More on the family of Mr G May of Swindon in Wiltshire; in 1995 he wrote to Betty
Judge about his wife's family:
Our STRANGE's were at Whaddon certainly from about 1770 to 1850 and then they moved to
Bradwell and later Wolverton to take advantage of the developments around LNWR railway works
in the Wolverton area." He then said that his wife's STRANGE's all have a "B" in their
Christian names after Richard married Mary BENT at Whaddon in the late 1700's. Thus his
father in law was William George Bent STRANGE.
Winterbourne Bassett
From Marida Pawsey in Victoria, Australia to Mrs Symes via Barbara Lawrence and Betty,
dated 1994, she says:
"I became interested in the STRANGE family in Ramsgate and found there were similar names to
my William's family (especially the use of WILLIS as a second forename). Also for some reason
my GGF William Henry STRANGE married my GGM there although both were from London."
From the 1841 & 51 Census returns she found that both families were from Winterbourne in
Wiltshire. It transpired that William of Greenwich and Thomas of Ramsgate were in fact
half-brothers; Sarah WILLIS was the mother of Thomas. From what I can decipher from her
notes we have all the following events from Marida's family tree in Winterbourne Bassett:
1 Richard STRANGE (Victualler)

Descendants of John STRANGE, of Hannington, Wiltshire
I descend from the Purton families of LARGE and SHEPPARD, though not from the individuals shown, who are related to me in various degrees. I have collected this information and compiled it for my one-place study of Purton Wiltshire.
1 John STRANGE, of Hannington, Wiltshire
+ Joan BALLOW 5 January 1679/80, Hannington, WIL
2 Elizabeth STRANGE, bap 30 January 1680/81 Hannington, WIL, d 6 February 1680/81
2 John STRANGE, of Purton, WIL bap 5 April 1686 Hannington, WIL, bur 12 December 1727 St Mary the Virgin, Purton, WIL,
+ Martha BAKER, of Liddenton, i.e. Liddington, WIL 29 December 1712 St Mary the Virgin Church, Marlborough, WIL, bur 23 October 1724 St Mary the Virgin,Purton, WIL

+ William LARGE, of Purton, Tetbury & London 22 December 1734 St Mary the Virgin, Purton, WIL; bap 24 December 1705 St Mary the Virgin, Purton, WIL, bur 11 November 1770, Tetbury, Gloucestershire; Occupation: 21 December 1734 baker
2 Samuel Ballow STRANGE bap 14 March 1688/89, Hannington, WIL

4.2 Descendants of John STRANGE, of Purton, Wiltshire
1 William STRANGE, of Purton, Wilts, Burial: 1 July 1588 St Mary the Virgin, Purton, WIL
+ Margaret Taylor 25 April 1584 St Mary the Virgin, Purton; buried: 4 July 1588 St Mary the Virgin, Purton
2 Elizabeth STRANGE, bap 10 February 1587/88 St Mary the Virgin, Purton, buried 23 December 1620 St Mary the Virgin, Purton, no parentage given in the entry for her baptism, but likely to be the daughter of the only STRANGE couple married at Purton in the 16th century, i.e.William STRANGE and Margrett TAYLOUR [sic] on 25 April 1584
+ Robert MOULDEN, The Elder 29 September 1614 St Mary the Virgin, Purton; bap 12 December 1589 St Mary the Virgin, Purton; no parentage given in baptismal records kept in Purton parish register before 1615; buriedn 11 June 1664 St Mary the Virgin, Purton,
3 Robert MOULDEN bap: 6 August 1617 St Mary the Virgin, Purton
The foregoing Robert MOULDEN, The Elder married again after his wife Elizabeth STRANGE died and probably had another son Thomas by her, unless Thomas was born to his first wife. Thomas Moulden ca 1620-1630 is one of my Purton ancestors.
4.3 Micheal STRANGE of Somerford Keynes, Wiltshire, died 1613, (Will Prob11/122-26/11/1613)

I have noticed that there is some on-going activity in updating the IGI with “STRANGE”entries that match some of my wife’s ancestry – these are located in and around the parish of Lydiard Tregoze, near Swindon, Wiltshire – registration district of Cricklade.
These IGI updates seem to be predominantly made from New Zealand with some from the USA. These IGI updates, having been made after 1991, do not offer any means of contacting the contributors – if anyone on this list might be those contributors, I would welcome establishing direct contact. Contact can be made via my family history web site where the STRANGE data can also be checked out.
Godfrey Bell followed up with:
I am from New Zealand (living in London) and have strong connections to a NZ branch of STRANGEs, however, I did not contribute to the LDS data. However, I do have some Lydiard Tregoze links in my tree and I wonder if any of them are in common with yours.

My STRANGE connection here is:
Bridget STRANGE married to Richard TUCKEY
28 February 1703/4 by licence both of the parish of Rodbourne Cheney married at St Andrews Blunsden;
Bridget has a brother Richard STRANGE.
Their father is Thomas STRANGE of Lydiard Millicent Wiltshire; he died 4 December 1710. His last will is made on 25 November 1710.
He bequeathed equally to his son and daughter:
1 close of meadow ground situate in Parish of Purton Wilsthire, commonly called Robbins Lane 5 acres
with the land late of Edward Pearce on the north,
land of .....Maskelyne, gent, on the west, land of
.....Woodridge, gent, on the south, a parcel of waste ground called Common Plot on the east.
Both brother and sister are since dead, so Ann Church widow of Richard STRANGE, and son of Bridget Tuckey - Richard Tuckey are administrators - source indenture 1763 between Edward Church (gent) and Ann Church (nee STRANGE) and Richard Tuckey (gent) and the second part Richard Goddard of Marlborough Esq.

4.7 From Jane Masri
in August 2005 My main line of research is with my mother's maiden name,
BRAVERY. The name, STRANGE, enters into the family tree on December 6
1879 with the marriage of Joseph BRAVERY to Bertha STRANGE in Croydon, Surrey
who were my great grandparents. Bertha STRANGE was born about 1851, Little Somerford,
Wilts, daughter of Simon and Lucy STRANGE, nee MILES who married at Little Somerford
March 6 1847. Simon was baptised 6 August 1826, Little Somerford, son of Robert
& Elizabeth STRANGE nee THRUSH who married May 10 1813 at Little Somerford.
Just recently, I was checking the 1871 census, to find out what Bertha was
up to prior to her marriage and was shocked to find her, with what appears to
be an illigetimate son! In 1871 she was at 6 Lower Somerset Terrace, Walcot,
Bath, St.Swithins with Sarah DUPE - wid - 55 - Nurse Monthly Bertha STRANGE
- Dau - unm- 21 - Charwomen - born Somerford Charles STRANGE - g/son - 1
- son of Bertha STRANGE - born Chippenham, Wilts. Now, I don't believe for
one minute that Sarah DUPE was her mother, I thinkSarah's place was a place
where pregnant unmarried girls were sent to (out of sight out of mind)
Following up on that, I wanted to find what happened to Charles STRANGE.
In 1881 he is a boarder at Blagrove Cottages, Wroughton, Wilts, with John &
Elizabeth HADDRELL. In 1891 Charles STRANGE, John & Elizabeth are
in Gloucester but the name is HATHERALL. I know that Bertha had an older sister,
Elizabeth born about 1848 and this Elizabeth fits her profile, so I need to
find a marriage between Elizabeth STRANGE to a John HATHERALL. It's evident
from later census that John & Elizabeth are childless. By 1901 Charles is
married toMartha and at Bradford on Avon with their first child, Bertha, born
1894.If all my findings are correct, I'm so surprised that my great grandmother
had a child out of wedlock, as the family were staunch Baptists and very strict.
Did the STRANGE family keep this to themselves? Did Joseph know
about her son, Charles?
I would be very interested if someone is connected to CHARLES STRANGE 1870
and could perhaps shed some light on this,
4.8 From Julie Hando <julie.hando[at]wales.gsi.gov.uk> My
family came from Wiltshire originally, my maiden name was STRANGE, my family
are now in the South Wales area. The furthest I have been able to go back is

of Wiltshire.

7. Oddments From Godfrey Bell Sep 2005 Mrs Henrietta Clark (nee Ayers) was aunt to
Richard Clark STRANGE b1839 in New Park Street, Devizes (according to the Family
Bible), and baptized at Streatley, Berks. Henrietta is recorded in the Family
Bible as living in Ilsley. I have found a West and East Ilsley near Streatley
in Berks. However, I cannot find a plain "Ilsley".

From Barry <offenbachau[at]yahoo[dot]com[dot]au> Evangeline
Lucy Strange, who married Henry Townsend in 1891 at Highworth in
Wiltshire, was my Grandmother. Evangeline was born c1875 in Wantage,
Berkshire, and was possibly an only child. Her parents were
James Thomas Strange (b 1849) and Mary Middleton (b 1839). Evangeline
moved to Australia before the great war and died in Bankstown, NSW
at the end of 1936. I am hoping someone can provide information
about this branch of my family.
Betty Judges said: I may be related to you, as James Thomas
Strange was the son of William Strange b 1808 West Hanney/Lyford
Berks and his 2nd wife Mary Pullen b 1809 West Hanney. They married
23 Feb 1834 West Hanney and had 10 children.
