Families From Carol Rudram I have a Sarah STRANGE, born 1752 Toddington, dau (I believe) of Joseph & Mary STRANGE.She married John SMITH in Toddington 10 Aug. 1773, and dau Sarah bap Toddington 23 Sep 1781 at Toddington married James WELLS 30 May 1813 again at Toddington. This couple are my3xgreat-grand parents on my mothers side - EDWARDS. From: Richard Hobbs October 19, 2002 Below are our interest in the STRANGE family. We have a Stone Strange born abt 1721Toddington married to Mary Gurney in 1744 at St John, Bedford. Mary Gurney was the sister of Elizabeth Gurney who married William Hobbs Butcher in 1758 at Toddington. William Hobbs died in 1791 and his will made out in 1787 was witnessed by William Strange who we believe married a Sarah White in 1742 at St John, Bedford, also witness to the will was Thomas Fox who according to the Toddington Parish register was a widower in 1765 when he married Sarah Strange (signs Sary) by licence. At present all my research has been concentrated in the UK, but I have recently come across an Memorial Inscription at Toddington (Bedfordshire) Churchyard recorded circa 1900 as follows:- "John Strange , who departed this life December 23rd, 1852, aged 64 years. Also of William Strange son of the above, who died in Australia, July 19th, 1854, aged 39 years". Could anybody please give me a few pointers of where to look to obtain details of William Strange and any of his kin in Australia. {A reply was received from Phil E G Plumbe that said he had found: Digger - Pioneer Index. Victoria 1836-1888 Surname: STRANGE Given Names: William Age: 39 Birth Place: BEDFORDSHIRE Year: 1854 Reg Number: 3893} From: Joan Kemp (nee Woodyear-Smith) February 28, 2003 My great grandmother, Frances Louisa Strange (click for picture), daughter of John Strange of Toddington, wed Henry Woodyear-Smith in Holborn, London, on 19th April 1870. Frances Louisa was born in Toddington on 3 Nov 1848, the daughter of John Strange & Rebecca Osborn (both of Toddington) John Strange was a baker & the son of another John Strange & Mary Fowler My William Strange who went to Australia was the son of John Strange of Toddington & his wife Mary Fowler. They had 4 children, William, John, Alice & Sarah. William went to Australia where he died in Melborne. William married a Mary & had a daughter Mary Jane. He is commemorated on a plaque in Toddington Church along with his parents & his Uncle, Thomas Fox (who married a Sarah Strange of the previous generation & died in 1789). You can see the entire inscription at http://www.toddington.net/memorial.htm : Thomas Fox. who departed this life August the........, 1789, aged .... years. Also of John Strange, who departed this life December 23rd, 1852, aged 64 years. Also of William Strange son of the above, who died in Australia July 19, 1854, aged 39 years. Also Mary Strange, relict of above John Strange, who died October 30. 1863, aged 77 years I have wills of John & Mary Strange (above) plus Sarah & Alice, William's parents & sisters. In her will, Mary Strange, mentions her late sons William & John & William's wife Mary & daughter Mary Jane. I am descended from William's brother, John Strange, bToddington 1813, who married Rebecca Osborn & had a daughter, my great grandmother, Frances Louisa Strange (I have her birth certificate) who died in 1908 in Frimley, Surrey This John had died by 1860 when his mother wrote her will. His whereabouts were a mystery until they turned up in the 1851 Census at Leighton End Stoke Hammond in Buckinghamshire. [Thanks to Heather Olsen for researching that - see BKM page] From Pamela Ruschke , I am looking for the marriage of Mary (maiden name unknown) to Mr. Strange (first name unknown). Mary may have had three daughters (at least) before she marriage Joseph Gregory. Mary Strange is my 4xggmother. Descendants of Mary Strange

From: Rob Strange If anyone has managed to plot the several Toddington Stranges onto a tree, could they tell me if each of the "Francis" baptisms in the 1600s has been traced via either a marriage or a burial? My own ancestor, Francis Strange, was married in Leicester in 1704 but there is absolutely no trace of his baptism in Leicestershire records. Of course, it's probably just coincidence, but every lead is worth pursuing! From Pamela <pFane[at]telus[dot].netHello Listers,> Information on the licence: G190 Jos. GREGORY, X, servant,
[abode] Chalton in Toddington, [age] 26 It appears as if Joseph owned 'The Star' public house in Chalton
in the 1790s. Further he is named in a Bargain and Sale dated
8 August 1797 being a Lease forming part of Conveyance by
indentures of Lease and Release.....: (q) several pieces of enclosed
and open field land in Toddington containing 21/1/6 late in the
tenure or occupation of Elizabeth Strange, but now by Joseph Gregory.
Mary Strange and Joseph Gregory had 5 Children I know of:
