Rumburgh
Attached is a very interesting family history submitted by David Vincent STRANGE. His story starts here in Rumburgh with the marriage of William STRANGE and Ann FISK in 1618. They had children in Wissett and subsequent generations were to be found in Suffolk at South Elmham, Spexhall, Westhall, Southwold, Chediston and Mendham. They later spread their wings in the 18th century to London and Berkshire; then to Wiltshire, Lancashire, Australia and Kenya. There are atleast two other submitters to this site with family connections to David (Paul STRANGE and Marg KEEBLE).

My ggg grandmother was Martha STRANGE baptised in All Saints, South Elmham, Suffolk. She married (22 October 1793 in St Margarets) to John Danby (born 1761 in Southelmham, died 10 March 1844 in Southelmham).

Her father was Francis Strange who lived most of his life at All Saints South Elmham, Suffolk but moved to Southwold, Suffolk where he died in the late 1790s. I have his will. His eldest son moved to London around the 1780s where he and his wife Frances Stockings had a number of children and they are registered in Dr William's Library. His eldest son was Francis STRANGE. Some of his other sons moved to Southwold with him, John STRANGE and Samuel STRANGE. Eventually either they or their children also moved to London. The father of Francis STRANGE who died at Southwold was Francis STRANGE, baptised 1691 died 1774 (His Will) and buried at All Saints, South Elmham. His father was also Francis STRANGE who died at Spexhall, Suffolk in 1726. His father was Francis STRANGE who died and was buried at Wissett, Suffolk in 1695.

STRANGE is not a Suffolk name and my STRANGE family appear to be the only ones in Suffolk around the early 1700s. Does anybody else have an interest in them?

The Will of Francis STRANGE died 1790 - he was the son of the Francis STRANGE who was buried in All Saints, Southelmham in 1774 and the grandson of the Francis STRANGE who died in 1726 and the great grandson of the Francis STRANGE who died in Wissett in 1695.

In the Southwold cemetery there is an MI for Francis STRANGE and his wife, Rachel. (Brick alter tomb-inscription on leger) To the memory of Francis Strange who died Nov 8th 1790 Aged 62 Also Rachel his wife who died June 1st 1809 Aged 76 Their souls returned to God Their bodies here doth lie A faithful monitor to prove That all who live shall die The awful trumpet shall sound and our Redeemer give An everlasting glorious proof That all who die shall live.
It is no 349 in block D Southwold St Edward.

My wife Barbara Strange of Lowestoft descends from Francis Strange of Spexhall (after 1667).

Will of Thomas Strange was written 4 August 1522,proved 22 September 1522 at the Archdeaconry Court of Suffolk. The executor and sole beneficiary was Agnes STRANGE his wife. Whether he has any relevance to my Francis STRANGE or to Marg's family of the same ilk (but not related) is not going to be easy to prove as the registers for Weybread start at 1694 - Karen Stewart

1819 Jun 15 Richard STRANGE, of the parish of Westhorpe, bachelor m Matilda BEDWELL, of this parish, single woman, by Banns with consent , by me Nicholas WOOD, Minister Officiating. Richard made his mark 'x'. Matilda signed her own name. Witnessed by James YOUNGMAN and Mary STRANGE. Both witnesses signed.
Up to 1836 there were no children; perhaps they went back to Westhorpe where Richard was from. Witness Mary Strange likely to be his sister. I did find a Richard Strange in the White's Directory of 1855 listed as a victualler at the White Swan in the village (and parish) of Stuston, assuming it is my Richard that died at Stuston in 1866.

Robert and Sarah Scopes Strange are my gr-gr-gr grandparents. Emily Strange married Ambrose Groves of Chapel, Essex. Their eldest child Laura Groves emigrated to Texas in 1884 with my maternal great-grandfather James William Cann of Devon. My grandfather Harry James Cann was born the following year. And my mom Laura Cann Dillard, who is equally excited to find our Strange cousins, was born in 1917.

Note from Mike Strange: There is a marriage between a Zachariah NANTICK and Mary STRANGE on 01 NOV 1821 at Bacton, Suffolk, England on the IGI, FamilySearch. The Batch Number this is under appears to only cover 1821; there are no other NANTICK or STRANGE references in that year.

That's it on the Strange's, so far, though I've found one or two in censuses local to Winston and Pettaugh,
I have as yet made no further connection
