These boys are part of the Northampton family of STRANGEs; their father, Thomas STRANGE,
then moved to Dartford, Kent where these boys were baptized. They later moved from

I am
looking for the parents of George Strange. His mother was Martha
White and father George Strange. He was baptised on 31 July 1822
at St Luke's, Chelsea. Lived, I think, at College Terrace,
Middlesex. A brother was Frances born 1825, also baptised at
St Luke's and maybe sisters Lucy, 1829, and Martha, 1830. Their address
was stated as Robert St. The family came to Australia, as
George married Emma Terrey in 1856 in Melbourne, Australia. Hope
some one in England can help me.

From Rae Fether: Esther (known as Hetty) Burney was the sister of Fanny Burney (famous for her diaries) and Charles Rousseau Burney was her cousin. He was a harpsicord player. The Jacobite engraver Robert Strange and his wife Isabel were close friends of the Burneys and mentioned often in the diaries. Mary Bruce Strange was their daughter and Ann Burney another sister of Fanny.[My copy of the diaries is entitled: "The early diary of Fanny Burney 1768 -1778" Vol. 11 published 1913.]

escape when being pursued by the loyalists after the Jacobean disaster at Culloden:
"….When
hotly pressed, he (Strange) dashed into the room where the lady, whose zeal
had enlisted him in the fatal
cause, sate singing at her needle work, and,
failing other means of concealment was indebted for safety to her prompt
intervention. As she quickly raised her hooped gown, the affianced lover disappeared
beneath its ample contour, where, thanks to her cool demeanour and unflattering
notes, he lay undetected, while the rude soldiery vainly ransacked the house."
The lady was Isabella Lumsden, whom he later married.

I also see there is a death in Hackney of Francis STRANGE in Mar 1854 (1b 234). Our Francis is already dead by then (1851).

Most of my Suffolk STRANGE families moved to London and its environs around 1800 and they
were in a variety of trades from shoemakers to coopers etc. Francis who was married to
Frances had quite a few children around the 1790 period. His son Francis became a wine
merchant and moved to Abingdon as did his brother William. They had children also. But the
Francis who married Frances's brothers also moved to London and also had children and
probably half of them were also named Francis. My Francis who married Mary was baptised
in Southwold on the 20 Oct 1794 and married Mary in 1818. He is mentioned in Pigot's for
Suffolk in 1823 as a shoemaker but by the 1839 Pigot's Directory is no longer there. His
uncle was London which is where a number of them appeared to go.

"My maternal grand father was Edwin Ernest STRANGE, born 1895 Feb 2 in Holborn, his father was
E. STRANGE and it was thought he may have been a Mayor of Royal Tonbridge Wells in Kent.
Edwin's mother was a Miss SIMPSON, his father's mistress! Edwin's sister, Stella, was also
born to the same relationship and, with Edwin, was placed with a foster 'Granny' at the age of
5 or 6 and never had contact with either parents from that time. Their births were not
apparently registered!

grandfather. 2. I think Francis William (Senior) and Francis William (Junior) may be the ones who came to
Mile End from Southwold, although Francis William (Junior) is no longer a cordwainer, but a
coachman/omnibus driver. Francis William STRANGE (Senior) who came from Southwold married
Mary Ashmonall in 1818, and a Mary STRANGE is the witness on Francis William STRANGE Junior's
marriage cert in 1844. This ties in with Suffolk research by Marg Keable and Paul.

From the Census, it could be read that Mary STRANGE, is the widow of our Francis William
STRANGE, Father to Ellen's husband. She could be the Mary STRANGE who was a witness at
Ellen's marriage to Francis William STRANGE. This would make it likely that James STRANGE of
the same address is Francis William STRANGE's son and Ellen's brother in law.

Rachel STRANGE born in Bedfont, Middlesex in 1840/1; her father was Timothy, born in
Turville, Buckinghamshire in 1803. Yvonne said, "Timothy was the son of John and
Ann CLEWER. John Moore added that Yvonne is clearly a relative of his wife's and that
John's brother William was a direct ancestor of hers.

Timothy STRANGE who was born in 1803 in Turville (son of John & Ann Clewer), at some point
moved to the Bedfont area. Timothy was my grandmother's grandfather. Timothy and Mary, as

Susan Barsby and I'm the granddaughter of Patricia Joan STRANGE. I'm now concentrating
my genealogy efforts on my grandmother's line. I am seeking more details about
Job STRANGE, born 1838/40 in Bedfont. He married Caroline Evans (born Pinner,
1840) and had at least 3 children: Caroline E STRANGE, William Job STRANGE (my
great grandfather) and Ellen J STRANGE. In 1881 census he and his wife were
living at 16 Myddleton Place, he as a pork butcher and the children were staying
with their aunt on their mother's side Elizabeth Evans on Buckingham Palace
Road (RG11 0108/63 22) By 1901 census, Job, Caroline and the 2 girls were living
at 6 Goswell Terrace, Clerkenwell. (RG13 255/20 31) William Job STRANGE had
married the day before the 1901 census to my great grandmother Rose Ayling.
They were at 24 Kimberley Gardens, Tottenham and William Job was a carver in
dining rooms. They had 7 children, the youngest of whom, Patricia Joan STRANGE
was my grandmother. I am wondering whether Job STRANGE is the same as the Job
born to Timothy and Mary in Bedfont (thanks to Yvonne Stone for this possibility)
but have no proof! - can anyone help?

Yes, the Job STRANGE, who lived at various addresses in London,
was the man born at Bedfont. The 1871 clearly lists Job STRANGE, 32, unm,
butcher, born at "Bedfont", a visitor in the household of Frederick
Cowper, 3 Spring Terrace, Lambeth (Vauxhall Ward). I have only seen the
transcription of the 1881 census which gives the birthplace as "Bedford".
The 1891 census gives "London" as the birthplace; while the
1901 clearly says "Bedford" again. However, since the only two
Job STRANGEs who appear in the censuses are this man and his nephew Job John
STRANGE, it seems pretty conclusive that you have the right man.
His line goes back to my ancestor, Thomas STRANGE of Watlington:
1. Thomas STRANGE of Watlington, Oxfordshire, married at Watlington,
30 Sept 1661 (also recorded 1664) Anne Beesley (Beasley; his name spelled Straunge).
She was buried there ("Anne Strang, wife of Thomas"), 3 July
1695. He was buried at Watlington 13 Aug. 1706.
2. John STRANGE,
buried at Nettlebed, Oxon, 13 Oct. 1712; m Katherine ---, who was buried at
Nettlebed, 16 Jan. 1701/2. He married second at Rotherfield Peppard, Oxon,
8 July 1702 Katherine Wilder of Nettlebed, who was mentioned in his will.

I didn't realize before that you are related to my wife. The first four generations
you show are her direct ancestors, but she is descended from the second John's
brother, William. The first John's first wife was Katherine Butler. He
married her at Nettlebed 5 Dec 1687, his surname being recorded as Strong. She
had a brother, William, and their parents were William and Elizabeth (Aldridge).
All this is from the Nettlebed PRs, but I can give you more details if you want.

An Adminstration for James Strange was sworn by his wife Elizabeth Bailey Strange for the sum of One thousand pounds at the London Consistory Court in 1824:
"On the ninth day of December One thousand and eighteen hundred and twenty four Administration of all said .............. the Goods Chattels and ......... of ....... James Strange ........ of Wardour Street Soho in the County of Middlesex Plumber and Glazier .deceased was ....? ..ommitted and granted to Elizabeth Bailey Strange Widow the Relict of the said deceased having been first sworn duly to administer."
However in the Estate Duty Register where one would expect to see some detail on what duty was paid on "Sum sworn under 1000 " pounds there was only a signed note...." £29 ret' (? could be returned or retained?) on the grounds of Debts. It seems that James had misled his wife about the state of his finances. I have not found out where he died or was buried but he died before the birth of his youngest son Frederick Metzner Strange on 28 December 1825 who was no doubt named after his uncle William Lloyd Metzner. Elizabeth Bailey Strange's sister Mary Thompson was married to William Lloyd Metzner
The family stayed on at Wardour Street for a year or so according to the rates, later appearing in Nelson Street, Greenwich in the 19841 Census. In the same road lived Elizabeth Bailey Strange's mother, Mrs Mary Clementson, (previously Thompson, nee Bailey), who died in 1838 leaving an estate of around £9000.

The Estate Duty Register gives a fairly clear picture of its intention:
"to
sell and proceeds to Relict for life with power to advance any part not exceeding
1/2 expected to..............(the children) and on her death equally............
(to children) at 21 but on................." "power to carry
on business"
Children were: James Walter Strange, Orlando Bailey, Frederick William, Elizabeth
Patty and Frank Hastings.
Orlando received £570 on 19th October 1882,
(probably for his marriage), on which duty was paid. After the death
of Martha Strange in December 1884 the sum of only £2605 was left to be
distributed to the children and duty was paid on the sum. Between 1869
and 1884 Martha and the children appeared to have got through about £5000
of the original £8000 estate.
James Walter Strange, my great grandfather, probably took over his father's business and sadly went into liquidation in 1880., causing a family rift

I have letters his siblings wrote to him while he was away at war around 1900-1901. One was signed by 'your loving sister Louisa' and another was signed 'your loving brother and sister Harry & Annie'. The address on the letter from Harry and Annie was '42 Mortimer Rd., Kingsland N, London'. The letters I have from his wife Sarah Ann STRANGE nee. Mackness was '61 Palmerston St. Battersea Park Road, London S.W.'.
I want to find out what happened to Louisa, Annie and Harry.
My Grandmother was Lilian Ada Lazenby, nee STRANGE, born December 21, 1897. Now I have found that she had a brother Thomas Harry STRANGE b.1896 and sister Jennie Emily L STRANGE b.1895. Her marriage licence states her father as Thomas Wait STRANGE and he has signed his name that way too.

I have the birth certificate of my Great Grandmother Rose Alice HAYWARD Rose was born on 27th March 1883,at 1 Alfred cottages, Turnham green, Chiswick, Middlesex. Her father John Thomas HAYWARD, Her mother Rachel Hayward formerly STRANGE. John Thomas Hayward's occupation being Carman / Carrier (see below) On putting these names into the search engine your STRANGE website came up! The last child listed to Rachel STRANGE and John Hayward, was John Hayward born 1878 - 1880, my Great Grandmother being born in 1883 I understand that Rose was disowned by her family around 1905 when she married 'beneath her', and had no more contact with her family. She lived in Hounslow all her life. As I live in West Wales I have not yet had the chance to look at any census returns, so can't tell you much more. If these people are not connected it will make my family history much harder, there will be two John and Rachel Hayward's of about the same age, and both in the Brentford area.
The family can be found in the 1881 Census at 1 Alfred Cottages, Chiswick, Middlesex, England. Source: RO Ref RG11 Piece 1351 Folio 116 Page 35. The family was submitted by Yvonne Stone. Lucy, one of John and Rachel Hayward's children, was born 1872 and was Yvonne's grandmother.

Marriage at St Luke's Finsbury, Middlesex in 1793. Thomas Bishop of this Parish Bachelor and Rachel STRANGE of this Parish Spinster were married in this church by Banns this 14th of August 1793 by me Jno Evans. Both signed their names and the witnesses were Ann Bishop, Philip Bishop, F. STRANGE and Ann STRANGE.
In the Church Rate Books for 1864 for Shoreditch, there is a James STRANGE living at 58 Margaret Street Haggerston, Middlesex.
Anyone lost a Maud STRANGE age 8 in 1891?. Well she can be found at the Dr Stephensons Children's Home and Orphanage on Bonner Rd, Bethnal Green in the 1891 census. Born is "N.K", not known. If you are interested it can be found under RG12/272, Folio 123B.

GRO references to fit the Benjamin/John connection has so far produced
nothing. John Strange was later an engine driver, living in
St Pancras. My father, Stanley Arthur Strange 1915-1959, told of
:
i) a connection with the French Navy.
ii) connections
with Suffolk
iii) connections with cattle and Scotland - correct - maternal Gregory family of drovers.
iv)
there is also
the female name LOUIE. John's 2nd dau was Louie
and I had an aunt Louie.
Perhaps fantasy , well, maybe!

the Thames Watermen 5 March 1638/9, 3 March 1630/1, 6 March 1637/8
and 5 March 1638/9. On the same site is the 'Admiralty Muster'
of 1628[9]:

attached to the port of "Ratcliffe" (parish of Stepney,
Middlesex) Probably the given name was from the port, but
not necessarily so

maternal grandmother was Eileen Maude Strange b 1880 in Emerald
Hill, Melbourne, Australia, my great grandfather was George Twining
Strange b 1857 in Prahran, Melbourne, Australia, my great great
grandfather was George Strange b 1822 Chelsea, London and my great,
great, great grandfather was also a George Strange, whose date of
birth I am yet to confirm. I believe that he married Martha
White in 1817 at Saint Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, London.

I am a descendant of Edward, his daughter Anne, married my great, great, grandfather, Joseph Watts. They had one son, Edward Henry, I think Anne died a year or two after. However, Betsey (Anne's sister) then married Joseph and they had two further children. Looking for any desendants in common.
I've searched the internet to see if a pub in Union Street, Aldershot, still existed, I don't think it does, however, I came across your site which listed a Betty Judge interested in Edward Strange (b. 1821 Littleton (Hounslow)), he was a beerkeeper/publican in a pub, The Builders Arms, 20 Union St, Aldershot.

Strange (husband of our gggrandmother). A likely candidate was one
connected to Marge Keeble's family - son of Francis and Mary Ashmonell.
This seemed likely because of the dates and also that the father
Francis was a shoemaker (as on our gggrandmother's marriage cert).However,
I have now found what I believe to be Marge's Francis on the 1841
census with the right children's names:
