Henry STRANGE s of John & Mary, Bricklayer (born 13 Apr1821) Mona
Strange <monastrange@yahoo.co.uk> May 2006 I would
love to know more about Henry Strange. He was supposed
to have been an artist and my father, Frederick William
Strange, says he remembers seeing a watercolour by Henry
Strange about 1963. I have seen his old house at High House,
Dymock, and the new one (for him) at Stanley Cottage. Above
the door he had cleverly intertwined the H and S - which
I think stood equally for Henry Strange and Stanley House! |
1823 Apr 9 |
George Frederick STRANGE s of John & Mary, Bricklayer (born 12 Mar 1823).
The above were born to John STRANGE and his second wife Mary GOODALL. |

John STRANGE s of William & Anne, Saddler (born 16 Jun 1819) |
1823 Apr 20 |
Martha Sheppard STRANGE d of William & Anne, Saddler (born 14 Jul 1822).
The father William could be son of John STRANGE and Ann (HUSGATE); we
believe it was they who had a son of this name baptised on 28 Oct 1791; see
above. He is recorded as Saddler of Northfield End, Henley in Pigot's Directory. |
1835 Aug 9 |
Jane Letitia Ann STRANGE d of William & Letitia, Gardener, Henley If this
William was the son of John Strange baptised 28 October 1791 it would mean that
Letitia was his second wife and that he had changed profession from saddler. Note
that a William and Letitia were married in Caversham 23 November 1834. Letitia
(the mother) died 1872 and was buried in Henley Holy Trinity 25 Oct. |

William STRANGE X Tunbridge Wells, Kent, bachelor, by license to Sarah
WOODLEY X otp, spinster. Witnesses: William WOODLEY X, Sarah MOORE
X & Knight WOODLEY (with consent of her father) I noticed, when working
with the Civil Registration records that there were a lot of STRANGE's in
Tunbridge Wells. Was it coincidence that this William came to Henley where our
STRANGE's were or did his family originate from here? Did he and Sarah stay in
Henley or return to Tunbridge Wells? I also noted from the 1861 Census that a
William WOODLEY, aged 62, and his wife Ann, aged 72, were living in Friday
Street, Henley (Schedule No 151); were they related to Sarah I wonder? He is
shown as a fisherman of Henley and she as a laundress of Bath. |

1839 Feb 26 |
John STRANGE otp Widower, by licence to Sarah FLEMMING Hurst in the
counties of Wilts & Berks, Widow Witnesses: Robert CULLUM and Ann
MULCOCK. This John was thought to have been John Benjamin who was
baptized 25 December 1803. In fact the evidence is now strong enough to accept
that it was indeed John Benjamin's father's third marriage, after Mary Ann
Copeland died; he would have been 61 and she 41 at this time. The marriage also
appears with different information in the 1837-1840 Marriage Register which
shows John as a farmer (his death certificate records him as Yeoman) his father,
John Senior, a builder. A marriage certificate has been obtained, it gives no further
useful information even ages are only give as 'Full Age'.

Richard STRANGE, X, horse keeper, otp, 32, Bachelor (Father: Frederick
STRANGE, Chair Maker) to Sarah HUGHS, X, otp, 34, Widow (Father: William
Clements, Labourer) Witnesses: Joseph AYRES and Eliza AYRES. Recorded as
part of the Frederick STRANGE family) They are most probably the parents of
the four children shown as baptized between 1860 and 1867. We have not found a
link with either Richard or Frederick. Note my father thought there was a
Frederick in the family, so far we have only identified George Frederick born 12
March 1823; too young to be William Copeland's son indeed he is his eldest
brother. |

1858 Mar 20 |
Sarah Strange 60 (born c1798) Probably fourth wife of John (Jnr 2), married in
1839. Earlier suppositions were that she married the Samuel in 1821 or John's
son John Benjamin in 1839. This is a summary of her Will from the Probate
Office, we now have a full copy, "Effects Under £200 - 22 April 1858
(corrected from 23 April in Index). The Will of Sarah Strange late of
Henley-on-Thames in the County of Oxford Widow deceased who died 15
March 1858 at Henley-on-Thames aforesaid was proved at the Principal
Registry by the oath of George Frederick Strange of Henley-on-Thames
aforesaid carrier of one of the Executors." One might surmise from this that
George Frederick was Sarah's youngest stepson. |
