3 Headington Enclosure Award
From Stephanie Jenkins
Headington Enclosure Award of 1804/5:
Richard STRANGE is allocated two plots of land. These plots are bounded by Windmill Road
to the east and Old Road to the south, and now form the site of the Nuffield Orthopaedic
Centre. I quote the actual text from the Enclosure Award:
----- Plot 23. And to and for RICHARD STRANGE in lieu of his copyhold Lands held under the
Manor of Headington and certain right of Common thereto belonging One Plot of Land or Ground
numbered 23 containing six acres one rood and two perches situate in Quarry Field bounded on
the North East by the allotment numbered 24 on the South East by the Road numbered III on
the South West by the Road numbered VII and on the North West by the allotment numbered 22.

----- Plot 24. And to and for the said RICHARD STRANGE in lieu of his copyhold Land held
under the Manor of Heddington [sic] and certain right of Common thereby belonging One Plot
of Land or Ground numbered 24 containing two acres three roods and eight perches situate in
Quarry Field bounded on the North East by the Road numbered XV on the South East by the Road
numbered III on the South West by the allotment numbered 23 and on the North West by the
allotment numbered 22.

Please note that the Manor of Headington (centred on the Manor House, now swamped by the
John Radcliffe Hospital) should be distinguished from the Manor of Heddington (centred on
Headington House, now the home of Sir Isaiah Berlin's widow).

I cannot find any references to the name STRANGE in the Headington
censuses or directories.

1741 Jun 16 Richard STRANGE of Headington to Hannah ANDREWS of Headington (wid)
From: Valerie Grant British Columbia, Canada
Our Hannah STRANGE married Wm CRAFFORD in 1777, Headington, Oxford, England. No idea who her
parents were, hoping to find out. Her daughter Hannah Crafford married William Savours of
Headington, and I can follow that line down.
