From: Ed Hanson My great-great-grandfather's brother, William Strainge,
he was mentioned in his sister's will in 1851, so I knew that he was living then,
but this is the first information that links him with Bristol. He was baptized
at Benson, Oxfordshire, in 1792. It appears that he had an illegitimate
son, William, by Mary Ricketts at Benson in 1811. He married Charlotte
West at Kingston Lisle, Berks, in 1814. They were probably the parents
of George (bp 1816) and Marianne (bp 1817) at Faringdon, Berks. The 1851
census gives his wife as Sarah, and the probate record gives: William Strainge
late of Thomas-street in the City of Bristol Ostler deceased 4 Nov. 1859 at
the said city. Letters of administration were granted at Bristol, 1 Feb.
1860, to Sarah Strainge of Tozer-court Thomas-street aforesaid, widow of said
deceased. Effects under £200. There is a family named "Strainge"
in the Bristol area, and I am now wondering if they descend from William Strainge
of Benson. Has anyone on the list been researching in the Bristol area?

From Barry Taylor <barry.shaun@ntlworld.com>Jan 2006 I am looking into the Bristol Stranges but I have only just started to do so. I had a "Strange"
Family connection in the Bristol area as being the Black sheep of the family - this being
mentioned by my Aunt. As a result I had them linked into the Gravesend family but from recent
information the Bristol family I have put below are linked into to them ---- but it now emerges
it must be further back in the 1700-1800's and not as I or we had assumed, thus the info as it
stands now is as I said below but we (a Strange in the USA from this line) are slowly obtaining
the Certificates to see what is correct or not correct as they were told they are descended
from L'Strange and related to the Boat Builder etc from Scarborough.

Ed Hanson said, I think that you can safely secure George Henry in the family that you suggest, as the 1861 census gives the following: Bristol, St Philip & St Jacob (West Street, bookshop) George Strange, 32, stationer, b Bristol Eliza Strange, wife, 30, b Bristol George H. Strange, son, 11, b Bristol Albert Strange, son, 9, b Bristol Fanny Strange, dau, 7, b Bristol Emma Strange, dau, 5, b Bristol Kate Strange, dau, 3, b Bristol Jessie Strange, dau, 1, b Bristol
This raises a question about the Jessie Lilian you have born in 1862,but she appears as a 1-year-old in 1861.

I would like any info on Thomas STRANGE of Chesterton, Glos, whose dau Elizabeth married William West, 1st Baron de la Warr (my wie's 12ggrandfather) in 1551. The LDS site gives a variety of dates and places; most say 1551, and many say Sussex (some Offington Sussex), some say Chesterton, and some Wherwell, Hants (where the West family were). The marriage is noted in Burkes etc. Since I guess it is before parish registers (I haven't checked for Chesterton), the exact place and date is not known. Thomas must have been a fairly big cheese to have married off his duaghter so well. So I would have thought there would be info available about him? There is a will of a Thomas STRANGE gent of Chesterton dated 1595 which may be relevant and worthy of investigation.
Chipping Campden
The following from David Howell:
STRANGEs' had a quarry in Chipping Campden. Mrs STRANGE used live next to my parents in the 1970s - so the family were [& may still be quarrying] mid last century. Just had a quick look at a Campden book & it mentions STRANGEs in late 1200s - daughter of Roger de Somery wife of Sir John Extraneo [or STRANGE]. Two quarter's of the manor Sir John Strang'es & ... were united in 1295.

Robert Strange From Mark Strange: I ran across records in a recently published history book of a Robert Strange, co-owner with a Thomas Croft, John Jay, William Spencer, Robert Thorne of an 80 ton merchant vessel (name unavailable) out of Bristol circa 1480 working the trade route between Bristol & Spain/Portugal. I am trying to find out if there is a connection between this Strange and the merchant Stranges out of Bideford/Devon in 1500-1600s.
(The source was "To Rule the Waves" by Arthur Herman.
The reference to Robert Strange is on page 31 and mentions John
Lloyd as the captain of the "Trinity" co-owned by Robert,
Thorne and the others).
From Doug Walker: Robert Strange was a Bristol merchant and
mayor of Bristol in 1474, '82 and '89. Robert's father John was
mayor of Cirencester and his brother Richard's descendent Robert
(1497-1589) was High Bailiff there. There was apparently a third
brother - perhaps he was the one who went to Bideford? Incidentally,
I think that the Robert Thorne you mention was the father of Robert
and Nicholas Thorne who obtained a charter from Henry VIII in 1532
founding Bristol Grammar School.
Seen in the historic King's Head Hotel
In 1550 it was owned by a gentleman named Robert STRANGE who was a clothier and High Bailiff of Cirencester in
1553. He was also thought to be High Bailiff of Gloucester and he died in 1588. The King's Head then passed, with
twelve other properties, to his grandson Robert STRANGE of Somerford Keynes who dies in 1654 and there is a large
marble monument in the village church. As he was unmarried his estates were divided between his sisters. The youngest,
Katherine was the wife of Sir Robert Jocelyn of Sawbridgeworth and they had a son, Sir STRANGE Jocelyn. A survey
of the STRANGE estate in May 1655 reads: "Amos Dauntsey: messuage, backsude and gardens in Cheping street called
the King's Head with glass. Waynescott and implements of household: tavernes adjoining belonging to another messuge
called Antilopp: rights of way throu the antilopp; another messuage belonging to the property of Cricklade Street"
Regarding the above Robert STRANGE, d. 1654; the Huntington Library has a copy of "The efficiency of Gods grace in
bringing gain-saying sinners to Christ: a sermon preached at Summerford in Wiltshire, at the funerall of that pious and
worthy young gentleman, Robert STRANGE : with a narrative of his short but wellspent life, by Simeon Ashe." In the
publication of his sermon, Mr. Ashe refers to the following family relationships:
- Lady Margaret Hungerford, Aunt
- Robert Joselin, John Foyle, Richard Southbye, Esquires, and Brothers in Law (husbands of sisters of Robert
STRANGE)
From Robert Henderson found this site by a Bristol native
seems very interesting: "Robert Henderson-Askew - Bristol
- The Age of Discovery For some of our merchants who had grown
very rich during the previous years, it wasn't such a financial
risk to send out ships looking for new lands and new markets. In
1460 the younger Canynges owned nine ships and employed 800 men.
Thomas Strange, in 1480, owned twelve ships, another prominent ship
owner was John Goodman. The sailors of Bristol had heard tales of
'Vinland' to the west through their trade with Iceland. From Spain
and Portugal they had bought back tales of the 'Western Isles' and
the 'Island of Brazil'. In 1480, John Jay the younger financed a
cruise by a 80-ton ship, captained by a Welshman, Thomas Lloyd to
seek the 'Island of Brazil'. After spending nine weeks in the Atlantic
the ship returned to Bristol, its mission unfulfilled. Another voyage,
the following year also returned empty handed." http://www.brisray.com/bristol/bvoyage.htm
In "Abstracts of Wiltshire Inquisitions post mortem, returned into the Court of Chancery," published by the British Record
Society, in the first volume is an abstract for Robert Straunge, Esquire of Somerford Keynes, d.26 Dec 1630, which refers
to other properties in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, and includes the following family information:
Parents buried at Somerford Keynes

Father: Michael Straunge
Sisters: Bridget Straunge, Coxwell

In the Fairford census transcript I have, Elizabeth STRANGE's birthplace is shown as Abbington, and someone has
assumed that this is a reference to Abingdon, Berks. Her birthplace in other censuses is shown as Arlington which is like a
twin village to Bibury on the other side of the River Coln. Unfortunately there is no record of her baptism at St Mary's
Bibury and there is no church at Arlington so I'm at a brick wall. My STRANGEs were centred around Quenington,
Poulton, Fairford and Cirencester and possibly Lechlade. Both Poulton and Fairford are now in Gloucestershire. It took
me quite a while to find my great grandmother Sarah STRANGE, because her marriage certificate said she came from
Polton, Wilts and I originally though this must be Purton, Wilts spoken with a Wilts accent!

Martin has sent me the following about which he says, "My STRANGE family were all agricultural
labourers in a small community of about 100 households. They were fairly static for almost 200
years. I have done a fairly intensive study of the village of Tormarton including census
returns, parish register entries and postcards of Tormarton circa 1910-1935. All the families
(apart from the farmers) seem to have intermarried during that time. My line is:
Ann STRANGE is my 2x great grandmother
Edward STRANGE is my 3x, great grandfather
Robert STRANGE is my 4x great grandfather
Samuel STRANGE is my 5x great grandfather
Robert STRANGE is my 6x great grandfather
Richard STRANGE is my 7x great grandfather".

2. Families
2.1 From Craig Kerry: in Mansfield
Herbert George STRANGE. Born 26/04/1903 in Stapleton, Bristol. Birth certificate witnessed on the 5th June 1903. I
don't know when or exactly where he died but I do know it was in this area either in Edwinstowe where he lived or Sutton
in Ashfield (Notinghamshire) at Kings Mill Hospital. He worked down Thorsby pit for a fair while and it was the coal dust
which eventually killed him so I'm told. His parents were:
Father:- George STRANGE (Coal Miner). Believed to be 19 on the 1901 census and believed to have died on
13/08/1958 Mother:- Matilda Emily Long from Gloucester, Bristol. Believed to have been 17 on the 1901 census and was
a General Domestic. It looks like they lived on Guinea Lane wherever that may be.
2.2 From James Peto-Gundersen sonofagun7"at"hotmail.com My branch of STRANGEs descends from Robert STRANGE of Bristol who founded St. John's Hospital there. He was the third son of the Mayor of Cirencester, Gloucester, his arms: Argent (gules) two lions passant gules debruised by a bendlet.
1 Robert STRANGE
+ Elizabeth Daughter of Thomas NORTON of Bristol.
2 Walter of Monescourte-Siston, Gloucester

in March 2007 I have obtained photocopies of the documents at
the SOG concerning the Strange families of Siston, Abson, Doynton
and Bitton, south Gloucestershire and Somerford Keynes, Wilts. compiled
by J Goulstone. I enclose both a GEDCOM file
derived from this and the same information in ‘Word
RTF’ format, which also incorporate the genealogy supplied by
James Peto-Gundersen (above). My own connection is as a descendant
of Edward, son of Thomas Luton and Elizabeth Strange who married
about 1555.

She said, "My great uncle was Albert Strange of England, an artist and
boat designer/builder".
(See Kent Page for Albert but
I can't find the link between the two families - Mike Strange)
1 Our great grandfather was George Fredrick Strange. + ? 2 There were 8 children.... Fredrick, George, William.... who came from a large family in Bristol, or surrounding area. Fredrick George Strange b c1873; d 1917; butcher/grocer. + Lillian Beatrix Rogers married in Bristol, lived on 4 Street in Bristol; b c1874 d c1970, moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1913-1914. 3 My father was Ronald George Frederick Strange, born in Bristol, England 1904, relocated as a teenager to Ontario though he had said that his middle names may have been Fredrick George. I always remember Dad going by Ronald G. Strange. He did say that it could have been 1905, he had always argued it was one year or the other; died 1990 + Catherine Clara Lydia Shantz 1941 4 Nancy Elizabeth Naomi Strange, b Nov. 5, 1946 (my sister) 4 Karen Michelle Strange, b March 7, 1955 (me) 3 Cilfford Strange b 1908; d 1985 0r 86) + Mae ???? 4 Mary 4 Helen 4 Diane. 3 Doris, she was the youngest but not sure of her dob. Doris had one daughter, Joan.
Our father remembered very well Albert Strange as a young boy and pre-teen. Albert "cultured" Dads interest in wood hulled
boats and he remembered sailing with him. Boats became Dads lifelong way of life. He was a wood boatwright, designing
and building several of his own. One of which was the Nancy, a 38 ft. ketch, built 1938 in Detroit, Michigan which he
lived aboard with his family later on. Sailing to Miami, Florida in 1948. Dad also inherited artistic ability, painting
in oils and some water colors. Our grandfather passed away not long after settling his family in Ontario. Our father, being the oldest child, went to
work while Clifford and Doris finished schooling.

Mike Murphy <mikemurphyam@yahoo.co.uk> Jan 2006 William Strange
was the son of Thomas Strange, born Stapleton c 1824. Thomas moved
north to Yarm, near Middlesbrough, about 1850. Thomas came from a family
of stonemasons (like all the Bristol Stranges!). Son William ended up in
Northumberland, and is down as a cartwright. It's my wife's family: Thomas' sister
Elizabeth (<1835>), who seems to have followed him to Yarm, married Charles
Doughty, who was also in the building trade. Elizabeth is my wife's gt gt
grandmother.
