Stray marriage in Abingdon of John STRAINGE of Cholsey, 1744

From Jean Williams
The Stranges below are mine! I am so pleased. Jane, born 1850 was my great grandmother. She
married Frederick Robert Johnson KINGSTON in Greenwich in 1878 and I was a KINGSTON until
I married. My queries are:

Does anyone know where and when John STRAINGE (married Maria in 1744) was
born and who his parents were?

Also, Charles and Maryann had another daughter, Alice, in 1860 and Maryann died soon after.
Charles remarried to Ruth BALDWIN (see 1871 census below). Alice does not appear in the 1861
census and I wondered if anyone knows where she was? Maryann was LOVEGROVE before she
married Charles.

I am trying to confirm that the Joseph who married Harriet is the same Joseph that married
Ann and had Charles in 1826. I believe that Harriet and Ann are one and the same person!

Jean Williams (jean1(dot)williams(at)ntlworld(dot)com said on  12 Jul 2004  tha she was looking for reports on 2 inquests for:
Harriet STRANGE, inquest held 2 November 1863, Coroner for Berkshire. Harriet died in Cholsey.
Mary Ann STRANGE inquest held 8 September 1860, Coroner for Berkshire.  Mary died in Cholsey.

She contacted the British Newspaper Library but the 'Berkshire Chronicle' and 'Reading Mercury' in a very poor condition and cannot be supplied to readers for consultation in the reading room and are not in a suitable condition to be made available for copying.  Asking if anyone else have these or other relevant papers she received the following:

"Reading Central Library hold all issues of the Reading Mercury  from pre 1750 to 1781; 1785-1920+ (and Newbury Library has 1753-18001; 1829-1920+);  Reading has the Berks Chronicle 1829-34; 1838-1820+ .  Also Jacksons Oxford Journal  has a lot of Berkshire stuff as well.  Reading also has the B Telegraph 1859-73, Reading Observer 1873-1920+ and 4 other papers covering the 1879s, 80s. Or possibly the inquest might have been picked up in the Windsor & Eton Express (on film in the Slough library)."

On 12 Aug 2004 Jean was able to say:
I thought I had the death of Harriet (nee Francis)in 1863 in Cholsey, however, having bought the death certificate and found there was an inquest, I managed to get a copy of the newspaper report.  In this it said her husband was Thomas.  I have Harriet as being married to Joseph STRANGE on January 16, 1816 at St Leonard, Wallingford.  So I must have the wrong certificate.  Can anyone find "my" Harriet's death and/or burial?  I have looked through the Cholsey burials on CD but she isn't there.  She was still alive in 1851, aged 60, as she appears on the census living with 2 sons and a daughter in law.
Does anyone want to "claim" the certificate?

Ed said on 13 Aug 2004:
Even though the age is slightly off, I think that your Harriet is the one who died at the Wallingford Union Workhouse, 14 July 1876, aged 87 and was buried at Cholsey, 17 July 1876 ["Harriet Strange, Cholsey, 87, from the Union Infirmary"].

She also shows up in the 1871 census of Cholsey listed at Ilges Lane: Harriett Strange, head, widow, 78, pauper, b East Illsley, Berks; Kate Strange, granddaughter, 11, scholar, b Cholsey [daughter of her son Edward].

Could you post the details about the 1863 Cholsey death and the inquest?

Jean Replied on 13 Aug 2004:
Thankyou for that Ed! Details on the death certificate:
Harriet STRANGE died 31 October 1863 Cholsey, County of Berkshire aged 68.  Labourer's wife.  Found dead in bed, sudden death from disease of the heart.  Inquest held 2 November,  Death registered by Coroner Edward Goucher.

The report on the inquest is from the Reading Mercury.  It is very short but says "SUDDEN DEATH.  On Monday an inquest was held at Cholsey, Berks on the body of Harriet Strange aged 68 years.  It appeared from the evidence of the husband, Thomas Strange, that the deceased has been suffering for the last 3 years from an abcess.  She went to bed on Friday night about half past eight o'clock in her usual state of health and, on the following morning, about half past 5 when her huisband awoke, he found her dead.  Other evidence was given and the jury returned the following verdict: "Died from natural causes, namely disease of the heart".

Hope this helps someone to claim Harriet - I wondered if it was Harriet Dix who married a Thomas Strange?

Or do you mean Harriet STRANGE, aged 63 living with her son Edward, aged  30.  She born in Ilsley.

Jean Replied on 13 Aug 2004:
Well, now I am not sure!  On the 1851 she is 60, pauper lving with son James, 21, d. in law 20 and son Edward 19 and in 1871 I have (although I don't have the image) Harriett 78, pauper living with grand daughter, Kate, daughter of her son Edward.

I can send you a copy of Harriet wife of Joseph death cert if you want.

Jean replied on the 14th August:
I have the death certificate of Harriett, wife of Thomas Strange if you know anyone who wants it - also the copy of the inquest report in the Reading Newspaper.

I have a Harriot Dix in my line who married a Thomas Strange circa 1821 Cholsey (all of this I need to confirm yet)  they had 5 children that I am aware of one being a Lucy Strange who married a Joseph Drewett (my nannas side).  I am finding it hard getting info as I cant get out to do the research much.  If you could please email me the copies you said you have I would greatly appreciate it.  Eagerly awaiting your reply.
